Scientists at Japan’s national institute of advanced industrial science say they’ve used a set of wisdom teeth to create stem cells. A dentist extracted the teeth from a ten-year-old girl.
Researchers say they were able to identify a form of stem cell in the teeth — a type of cell capable of developing and growing into other types of cells. It took about three months for it to develop into a usable stem cell.
The scientists say it’ll take about five years to find out if the method will have any practical use, but believe it’s a significant achievement.
The method bypasses the ethical issues involved with using stem cells from human embryos, and it also utilizes teeth that would otherwise end up in the trash.
