Palliative care is a medical specialty which is not the same as hospice care. In fact the goal is to relive pain, symptoms and stress of serious illness whatever the prognosis.

Dr Rajeev Mathavan of Doctors Hospital at Renaissance explains more.

Palliative care is not dependant on prognosis and can be delivered at the same time as treatment that is meant to cure you. The goal is to relieve suffering and provide the best possible quality of life for patients and their families.

A team of experts including palliative care doctors, nurses and social workers provides this type of care. Chaplains, massage therapists, pharmacists nutritionists and others may be a part of the team.

Palliative care is fairly new to some hospitals and any patient diagnosed with a chronic illness should ask for more information about it.
