Weslaco City Manager, Anthony Covacevich has resigned from his position. This action comes just minutes before a city commission underwent a vote that was expected to oust him. The timing of the action comes months after animosities between Covacevich and mayor Buddy de la Rosa began and just two weeks after election results place de la Rosa and his political allies in control of the board. And it is not the first time that de la Rosa seeks to remove Covacevich. In August of 2008 the vote to get rid of the city manager was split along party lines.
Although the city commission could authorize a severance package, Covacevich is an at-will employee who is not under contract, so he can be fired at any time without compensation. Mayor de la Rosa blames Covacevich for Weslaco’s financial troubles. On the other hand, Covacevich alleges that other factors like low sales tax revenue and high fuel prices could not have been fathomed. Tonight the board has chosen Francisco Castellanos to be the Interim City Manager for the next 90 days. During that timeframe the board will be reviewing applications for the post.
