The so-called sunshine vitamin may be playing a major role in the development of multiple sclerosis. Doctors with the U-K’s university of oxford say a vitamin D deficiency can trigger a common gene variant that causes M.S.
Their study found proteins activated by “D” bind to a particular d-n-a sequence lying next to the gene variant causing it to switch on. Researchers say this shows m-s is caused by both biology and the environment. Biology because it involves our genes, and environment because our body makes “d” when exposed to the sun.
Researchers also found increased d intake during pregnancy can help cut a child’s risk of getting M.S. later down the road. The study appears in the journal “p-l-o-s genetics.”
When somebody suffers m-s, the body’s immune system attacks the central nervous system damaging nerves in the brain and spinal cord, that can cause minor illness is some and permanent disability in others.
