Vela acquitted of all charges

After being involved in a sex scandal, former Alton police chief Jose Luis Vela was acquitted.

Hidalgo county district attorney’s office reported that during last week’s trial Vela’s charges on sexual assault and theft had been dismissed.

Vela had been accused of allegedly drugging and raping a male police officer, however his attorney was able to gather enough evidence that proved to the jury that the relationship was consensual and that the officer frequented Vela’s residence on several occasions.

Prosecutors chose not to continue with the second trial since the circumstances were similar to those as the victim in the first case.
