Underage drinking is a problem at colleges and universities
August 19, 2008 | Health
Underage drinking is a problem everywhere and certainly at colleges and universities across the country. But, believe it or not, more than one hundred college presidents want the drinking age lowered from twenty-one to eighteen.
The reason? They say it will help reduce binge drinking by students. Duke University president Richard Brodhead said the current legal drinking age of twenty-one quote, “pushes drinking into hiding, heightening its risks, including risks from drunken driving, and it prevents us from addressing drinking with students as an issue of responsible choice.”
Naturally, not everyone is on board with the college presidents’ campaign. Mothers against drunk driving accused the presidents of misrepresenting research and urged parents to carefully consider the safety of their children at colleges whose presidents are seeking to lower the drinking age.
Other schools on the list include the university of Maryland, Dartmouth and Ohio state university.
One side-note you may not know. The United States has the oldest drinking age in the world. Most nations allow alcohol consumption at sixteen or eighteen — and, some have no minimum drinking age at all.
