Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Alton bus tragedy

Each September for the past two decades, family members, survivors and friends of the 21 students that died in the bus crash visit the site to pay their respects to the victims.

20 years ago today, school bus number 6 which carried 81 students, had just passed the intersection of Bryan road and 5 mile line when it was struck by a Dr. Pepper delivery truck driven by Ruben Perez. The bus plunged off the roadway and into the flooded caliche pit below.

18 teenagers drowned in the murky water of this 40-foot deep caliche pit on September 21, 1989. Another 3 victims died days after the accident and the 60 high school and junior high students that survived, would go on with their lives without a way of forgetting one of the worst school bus accidents in the nation’s history.
