This is the time of year, for many folks to step up their workout routine. New year’s resolutions often include getting in shape and dieting to lose weight. But for some — low carb high protein diets can cause a very unexpected side effect. Podiatrist Juan Rivera says these popular diets can trigger symptoms of gout. Often affecting the foot.
Juan Rivera, D.P.M. Podiatrist: “The joint gets red hot swollen.”
As the body digests protein from foods like meats and beans, Uric acid’s produced. Most of us can clear it out of our system but for others, uric acid crystals build up in the joints, causing Gout. Over time, inflammation from it can break down bone.Although you might be tempted to cool down the inflamed foot–
Rivera: “Stay away from the ice. Put your foot in a bucket of warm water with Epsom salt and that raise the temperature really dissolves the uric acid crystals and the relief is immediate.”
Another fix: use hydration to dilute the uric acid and cut back protein helping you get back in step.
Any weight loss questions — best to check with your doctor or a dietitian, to get a balanced diet that works best for your body. As for the gout — it’s the most common cause of inflammatory arthritis for men over forty. More than five million Americans suffer from it. Some of who need medicine to keep it in check.
