A federal magistrate has ordered Hidalgo county commissioner Sylvia Handy to remain on 24-hour lockdown. She could end up in jail amid allegations of trying to influence a witness in her criminal case. Prosecutors believe Handy offered $500 concert tickets to family members of an undocumented immigrant who allegedly worked at her home, this after an indictment that claims Handy hired the woman to perform housekeeping and babysitting services using taxpayers money. Handy’s attorney, Al Alvarez, tells Fox 2 News, she maintains her innocence and denies his client had done anything wrong. The county commissioner for precinct one is facing charges ranging from conspiracy, tax fraud and harboring illegal immigrants, Handy at this time is under GPS monitoring.
