New research out of Leiden (lie-din) university in the Netherlands shows obese people are at a fifty-five percent increased risk of developing depression over time… While depressed people are fifty-eight percent more likely to become obese.
That’s based on data from fifteen previous studies involving nearly sixty-thousand people.
Researchers say since both have widespread public health implications, it’s important to understand their relationship.
The link is still unclear… But the authors think one reason could be increased inflammation — which is a sign for both.
Other suggestions include depression interfering with the endocrine system, certain antidepressants that put on weight, and extra weight contributing to being less satisfied with the way you look.
Researchers also point out depression and obesity both raise the risk developing heart disease.
