Strokes cause loss of brain function due to a disturbance in blood supply to the brain. It is the leading cause of disability in the untied states.
There are signs that act as indicators of an oncoming stroke. The most common are slurred speech, light weakness in one side of the body and blurred vision. Most people choose to ignore the symptoms and this leads to a much larger problem. Dr. Nashim Manohar tells us more.
NASHIN MANOHAR, M.D.: “Usually the most common types…these things happen at night and they think its a funny feeling…………completely paralyzed and it becomes an emergency situation”
High blood pressure, hypertension and diabetes need to be monitored regularly in order to act as preventative measures against strokes, although some people are at a higher risk regardless.
NASHIN MANOHAR, M.D.: “Genetics. There is nothing you can do about it………..medications will prevent strokes later down the line.”
If you do suffer a stroke there is hope of regaining mobility and speech through rehabilitation. The sooner you visit a doctor if you feel the warning signs the higher the probability that you will recover from a stroke.
