As the economy gets worse, experts say the number of cases involving shaken baby syndrome is increasing. They met at the statehouse today – shaken baby syndrome prevention experts. They’re appealing to legislators for help. Which they say is crucial in these tough economic times.
“This is a tragedy that does not have to occur – we know how to prevent it – we have so much work to do.”
The number of shaken baby syndrome cases has gone up in the bay state – and according to some experts, the current economic climate can be a contributing factor.
“Over the past three months between mass general and children’s hospital, we had 9 cases of shaken baby syndrome – this is more than double the cases from last year.”
Shaken baby syndrome is caused by the violent shaking of an infant or young child resulting injuries include bleeding in the eyes or serious brain injury.
Debbie Eappen’s son, Matthew, was killed in 1997, as she explains here, by her childcare provider. Since then, she has been trying to prevent other tragic cases. Part of that includes trying to secure financial support from the state.
“Funding at this time is even more important because I believe that the economic situation being so poor right now, there’s probably going to be an increase in child abuse, as that increases stress of many parents and caregivers.”
