Border patrol agents arrested two alleged smugglers accused of opening the manhole and leading the undocumented individuals into the country. US Border Patrol Spokesperson John Lopez told Fox 2 News, smugglers have made this area a gateway for the city, adding that immigrants are willing to take this journey despite the risks.
Border patrol officials notified the city about this situation. Brownsville Mayor, Pat Ahumada told Fox 2 News the city is making attempts to make the drainage pipe impassible.
The city is looking at a way to cover the starting point of the drainage pipe in Hope Park.
City leaders just want people to be able to enjoy the park and not have it be a front door for illegal activity.
