Advocates for the passage of proposition 8 say the states existing nine inpatient hospitals are insufficient, especially for those veterans in south Texas who currently drive five hours or more to San Antonio for treatment. Here are the numbers, proposition 8 passes by wide margin of % of the vote. In the Rio Grande valley, a future hospital would still be the responsibility of the federal government, but the adoption of the amendment could help get the project moving more quickly. Other propositions tonight include proposition 4, which would create a national research university fund out of $500 million in existing state money. Currently, Texas has three top-level research universities: the University of Texas at Austin; Texas A&M University and Rice University. This amendment passes with a margin of % o f the vote. Finally, proposition 11 seeks to limit eminent domain powers. It would state in the constitution that governments are prevented from seizing private property and giving it to a private developer to boost the tax base. This was a popular one tonight as it passes with % of the vote.
