U.S. Border patrol agents along with state and local law enforcement agencies in the Rio Grande Valley, are reporting that more suspected drug traffickers and human smugglers are using homemade spikes in their attempt to get away during pursuits

In 2009 law enforcement authorities in the valley witnessed a significant increase in the use of spikes by smugglers…. 15 incidents compared to only one in 2008.

The spikes consist of several metal points arranged in such a way that regardless of how it lands on the roadway, one point points up, creating a tire hazard. These particular spikes appear to be fashioned from nails welded together

In most cases smugglers deploy the spikes in order to disable law enforcement vehicles while they are in pursuit… But spikes have also been pre-deployed on avenues and areas commonly used by the smugglers in an attempt to immobilize responding law enforcement vehicles.

Although none of the spiking incidents have resulted in injuries, the spikes represent a serious danger not only to the lives of the officers, but the public in general.
