Today the second day of the three-day Mexus gulf exercise took place off the coast of South Padre Island and we were on hand with the coast guard to see it all in action.
This morning in South Padre Island, the United States coast guard hosted Fox 2 news as they conducted their annual Mexus gulf exercises.
The mighty US coast guard cutter by the name of Brant, which made its way from Corpus Christi for this drill was our vessel for the day and after a short safety Breefing, we were on our way. The exercise consisted of sailing out to a predesignated area and coordinating with several other vehicles to determine the threat and extinguish it accordingly.
This is C-130 Hercules, for the purposes of this exercise it is dropping large quantities of water. However, had this been an actual oil spill the Hercules would be dispersing a dissolvent designed to break up the hazardous material. The dolphin helicopter is not the Hercules’ only extra set of eyes. A zodiac deployed from the cutter also aids in the effort to rapidly and efficiently minimize any spread of pollutants.
Chief Arnold expressed his great satisfaction with the exercise and told Fox 2 news that without fail every year they learn something new from their Mexican counterparts while also sharing their knowledge with them.
