San Juan Swat Ready for Worst Case Scenario

A man kills his wife, kidnaps another individual and holds
him hostage as SWAT team members negotiate with him to
convince him to surrender peacefully. Around 9:45 Wednesday
morning San Juan police respond to an emergency call near
Raul Longoria Road and Bus. 83. An officer is called for
back up after a murder suspect refused to cooperate.
Twenty members of the special weapons and tactics team
surrounded the suspect who remained in his vehicle. After
almost two hours, negotiators convinced him to surrender.
But none of this was real. It happened to be part of the
weekly training the San Juan SWAT team undergoes to better
prepare their officers in case a situation like this would
erupt in real life. The swat team leader told Fox 2 News,
the training is necessary, especially now that violence
seems to be spilling over from Mexico.
San Juan police department conducts this type of training
at least once a week. Other cities like Weslaco are
joining to share tactics that may ultimately help reduce
crime in the area.
