San Benito Soldier’s body arrives in Harlingen

The flag draped casket of San Benito soldier, Adriana Alvarez arrived at gulf aviation airport in Harlingen to a grief stricken family and community.

Private first class Alvarez is the first female soldier from the Rio Grande valley to die while serving her country in Baghdad, Iraq.

An honor guard carried her casket from the charter plane to a hearse, which then drove through a procession led by the patriot guard riders from the airport to her home town of San Benito.

The 20 year old was killed last Wednesday, however military officials are investigating the death and have not publicly stated the cause and manner, saying only that Alvarez died of injuries sustained while supporting combat operations while deployed with the 504th military police battalion, 42nd military police brigade.

Alvarez graduated from San Benito high school in 2008 and joined the army august of that year. She was expected to return home this summer.

Visitation hours will be held tomorrow at San Benito funeral home from 8:30 am through 9pm.. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10am at San Benito funeral home.
