Risk of Prostate Cancer Rises for Male Drinkers

Male beer drinkers beware – it may increase the risk for highly aggressive prostate cancer. That’s according to research at the Fred Hutchinson cancer research center at the University of Washington. The study, which included more than 10,000 men, found that those who drank heavily- that’s one point seven ounces of pure alcohol a day five or more days a week- were more than twice as likely to develop what’s called high-grade prostate cancer. The study’s main goal was to test the effectiveness of Finasteride, a drug prescribed to prevent prostate cancer. Heavy drinking not only reduced the drug’s effectiveness, it also increased the risk of aggressive cancer. The majority of prostate cancer cases each year are considered ‘low-grade’ or grows very slowly. Most heavy drinkers in the study drank beer
