University of California at Los Angeles researchers say cost may influence people struggling with binge-drinking, drug or mental disorders to quit.
They found by raising the price of cigarettes ten percent. There was more than an eighteen percent drop in smoking rates among them, study authors note. Individuals with tendencies toward binge-drinking, drug or mental disorders comprise forty percent of remaining smokers.
They caution more research is needed to confirm the price-habit connection among these particular smokers.
The findings can be found in the “American Journal of Public Health.”
