Earlier today President Obama signed into law the Edward Kennedy serve America act, this bill will authorize and expand the amount of national volunteer programs that reach out to communities in need by increasing the number of new volunteer opportunities from 75,000 to 250,000.
Congressman Henry Cuellar of the 28th district of Texas recognizes the challenges these colonias face as they are the ones in need of the most help and yet they are ones that can’t afford to pay for it. This amendment will eliminate the cost needed for volunteers to provide the colonias with everyday necessities.
In the state of Texas, there are currently over 2,200 colonias. The congressman recognizes that the colonias that need the most help are those along the border, including hidalgo and Starr County.
Now in the upcoming days congressman Cuellar will meet with CEO of the national and community Service Corporation to discuss the colonias that are in need of help and the amount of volunteers needed.
