Power grid overwhelmed!

When the thermometer drops, heaters power up and the increase in usage contributes to outages. Fox 2′s victor Castillo takes a look at how several areas of the valley have been affected by a loss in power.

According to initial data from the state grid operator, electricity usage in Texas rose Friday as arctic air covered most of the state, hitting another winter power record after setting one… Just the night before

Power outages affected 35-hundred valley homes by 8am. The numbers went up to 45-hundred due to the high power demand by 9:30am.

Fox 2 news cameras capture the moments when AEP crews are working to restore power in the most affected areas that include mission, San Benito and Weslaco —– replacing fuses and ensuring all control panels are working and monitoring the power grid

By 2 o’clock the number of homes without power went down to 850.

The current cold snap, expected to linger into the weekend, is the longest in the lone star state since 1990, according to national weather service officials

Forecasts call for temperatures to drop into the teens Friday night but weekend power demand will slide as businesses close.
