Irish novelist Colm Toibin is favourite to win the 2009 Costa Book of the Year award for his sixth novel, Brooklyn.pThe story of an Irish woman who travels to New York in the 1950s won the Costa novel category earlier this month. The award’s individual categories are split into novel, first novel, poetry, biography and children’s book. Raphael Selbourne, Christopher Reid, Graham Farmelo and Patrick Ness make up the nominees, with the winner of the pound;25,000 prize announced on Tuesday.

The Ask and the Answer Bookmakers William Hill made Tobin 6-4 favourite to win. The other contenders include Selbourne, who won the first novel award for Beauty, the story of a young Bangladeshi woman on the run from her family, while debut biographer Farmelo won his award for The Strangest Man, about the life of physicist Paul Dirac. Ness won the children’s book award for The Ask and the Answer which the judges acclaimed as quot;a major achievement in the makingquot;. Reid is also in contention after scooping the poetry award for A Scattering, a tribute to his wife following her death in 2005. The winner of each category gets pound;5,000, with the overall winner pocketing a further pound;25,000. Originally established in 1971 by Whitbread, Costa took over the sponsorship of the prize in 2006. Since the introduction of the Book of the Year award in 1985, it has been won nine times by a novel, four times by a first novel, five times by a biography, five times by a poetry collection and once by a children’s book.
