New research finds a way for some people to overcome insomnia. A study out of Canada’s Laval University says combining cognitive behavior therapy with medication appears to improve sleep.
Doctors looked at 160 people. All of them underwent therapy, but half also took Zolpidem, sold under the brand name Ambien, for six weeks. They found the therapy with or without the drug improved people’s ability to fall asleep, as well as increased the quality and length of sleep. Researchers say the findings are beneficial because if insomnia goes untreated, it can lead to problems functioning during the day and even major depression. They recommend only taking the drug for six weeks, but continuing with the therapy in order to permanently change sleep habits and manage to eventually have no trouble falling asleep on your own. The study appears in J.A.M.A– Journal of the American Medical Assoc.
