New technology to battle prostate cancer in the Valley
November 19, 2008 | Health
The incidence of prostate cancer cases in the valley is growing but there is hope for successful treatment and recovery.
There are now doctors who specialize specifically in urology cancers such as prostate and kidney and they are implementing the latest technologies to make sure the patient gets the best care possible. Dr. Dipen Parekh from the cancer center at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is one such specialist and he tells us about the benefits of using robotic technology in prostate surgery.
“The advantages of robotic surgery are it’s minimally invasive. It avoids a big incision that is something we have to make for complex open procedures. The recovery is much quicker. The blood loss is supposed to be lower and the cancer outcome are either the same or in some cases better than open surgery because of the enhanced magnification and the wrist motion that the surgical robot provided us with..”
The surgical robot provides twelve times more magnification and allows the doctor to better see the surgery site. Ultimately in prostate surgery the doctor measures success by three things.
“. It’s three things oncological effacy that means control of the cancer……….and seals those nerves and delicate blood vessels and keep the person in full urinary control.”
Dr. Parekh suggests consulting with an urologist or calling the cancer center at Doctor’s Hospital at Renaissance to schedule an appointment to determine if you are a possible candidate for robotic surgery of the prostate.
