Results of the first thorough study of behavior treatment in autistic children as little as toddlers show promising signs.

Researchers have shown for the first time that if a child is diagnosed with autism as early as 18 months of age, offering the toddler age appropriate effective therapy can lead to raised IQ levels and improved language skills and behavior.

Researchers studied less than fifty children, ages eighteen to thirty months, at the university of Washington.

They either gave children early behavior treatment– called the early start Denver model– or milder forms of treatment.

Kids in the early treatment group worked with therapists four hours a day, five days a week– *plus* five hours a week with their parents.

After two years, they showed signs of improved IQ and language skills– about a third were diagnosed with a less severe form of autism.

The less treated group showed little improvement. However, none of the children were considered cured.

The study appears in the journal “pediatrics.
