Doctors are one step closer to understanding the mysterious and unexplained sudden infant death syndrome — better known as SIDS.
A new study in the journal “science” says a brain chemical best known for regulating mood may play a role.
Doctors with the European molecular biology laboratory in Italy autopsied the brain tissue of babies who died from SIDS.
They found a serotonin imbalance in their brain stems.
Doctors then engineered mice with the same problem… And found the abnormality is enough to cause sudden death.
Doctors are now hoping to develop a test to check for SIDS risks.
An expert with the national institutes of health also says this should offer some sense of comfort to parents, because this means there was nothing they could have done to prevent a SIDS death.
She calls this a real disease.
