Young children of moms abused by their partners are at an increased risk of being obese, according to a new study.

The study – led by doctor Renee Boynton-Jarrett of Boston University School of Medicine — studied nearly sixteen hundred children born between 1998 and2000.

Mothers were interviewed when their kids were born…and up through their fifth birthday.

The kid’s height and weight were measured at ages three and five.

Most of the children were born to unmarried parents.

Researchers found youngsters whose mothers reported chronic abuse were eighty percent more likely to be obese at age five. Compared to children whose mothers reported no abuse.

The association between exposure to domestic violence and obesity was stronger in girls than boys.

It was also strong among kids whose mothers said they lived in “less safe” neighborhoods.

Results can be found in “Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.”
