New Police Chief Named: Weslaco

The Weslaco City Commission has named a new chief of police. Jose Perez Jr. Will now succeed Interim Police Chief, Art Avila who also leads the fire department. The position became vacant last month after City Manager, Francisco Castellanos fired previous Police Chief, J.D. Martinez. The move was supposedly made to save the city money. Martinez, the public works director and three others were sacked in the process. Perez’s salary and starting date are in negotiation. Perez owns a security company and began his law enforcement career with the city of Weslaco before venturing into the Edcouch-Elsa P.D. and eventually, the Progresso Police Department.
