Scientists discover a member of a new class of hormones that may help fight diabetes and other obesity-related illness.
The hormone’s called Palmitoleate. Produced by body fat, it enhances our ability to control blood sugar and prevents the liver from accumulating fat.
Harvard doctors studied it in mice, but say it’s also found in people. They think manipulating it may help fight type two diabetes or fatty liver disease. Most hormones are protein or steroid based, but this is the first known class of hormones — called lipokines — that are made of fatty acids. The study appears in the journal “cell.”
