More Troopers on the Roads for New Years

“Operation Holiday” as the Department of Public Safety refers to it, will have every available trooper looking for anyone that is speeding, not wearing their safety belts and above all, drunk drivers.
Johnny Hernandez, DPS Spokesperson: “We will have zero tolerance for driving while intoxicated. You will be arrested if you get caught drinking and driving, so my advice is get a designated driver that’s sober, call a taxi, or get a family member to drive you home.”
The holidays can be tragic, as many years have proven to be. According to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis, the highest percentage of alcohol impaired drivers in fatal accidents belongs to the 21 to 24 years of age group, racking up a staggering 37%, followed by those 25 to 34 years of age with 28% and then those 35 to 44 years of age with 26%. For Hidalgo County, this holiday season has already resulted in death…and alcohol was indeed a factor.
Hernandez: “With this past holiday, we had one accident involving two fatalities, two drivers. That one was alcohol related and speed was also a factor with that.”
Officials urge everyone to be responsible and remember that the holidays can be celebrated with alcohol, if they’re handled with caution.
