Tonight, the man that helped save members of the family speaks to our cameras.
Gerald Heckman says he was driving home when he saw the Chrysler van go up in the air and into the canal on the 1800 block of Bentsen road. Without hesitation, he jumped in and pushed both the mother and one of the daughters to safety. The other little one was saved by her father, the only one that did not survive the accident.
Gerald Heckman: “I was gonna go back in and try and help the guy, but by the time I got over there, he was already under water. The wife kept saying he couldn’t swim but at least, how it looked to me is that he saved his daughters life by trying to keep her above water.
You could say this hero was at the right place at the right time, but says more could have been done to save the father.
“Nobody had nay ropes or ladders or any type of equipment we could have used and even when police and E.M.S. showed up, you know, they tried their best but stuff we needed, you know, rescue divers and such didn’t show up until and hour later.
It just so happens that Heckman is a registered nurse.
