A Port Isabel man is recovering at a Brownsville hospital tonight after being stabbed at a convenience store Tuesday. Police believe this incident may be gang related. Evaristo Lerma from Port Isabel is in stable condition and recovers from 14 stab wounds that he received after getting into a brawl with a former acquaintance outside of a convenience store on Queen Isabella Blvd.
“When the officer arrived he noticed a subject coming out of the store covered in blood,” says Gualberto Gonzalez, Port Isabel Chief of Police.
This is surveillance video from the business minutes before Lerma was attacked by 29-year-old Wenceslao Guillen Jr. The man in the white shirt and the woman in blue, accompanied Guillen, making a few purchases before the incident. At one point the man in the white shirt answers his cell phone and says that he sees Lerma.
“They did know each other. They are both from Port Isabel. This is a small town, so most people know each other in the area, ” says Gualberto Gonzalez, Port Isabel Chief of Police.
