La Joya police chase drug smugglers back to Mexico

Two alleged drug smugglers led La Joya police officers on a high speed chase early this morning.

The incident began near FM 2221 and expressway 83 and ended near the river on Sam Fordyce road.

Police say the suspects managed to get away after the passenger of the ford pick up truck threw homemade metal spikes to disable the police units.

Both suspects swam back to Mexico and left the truck and drugs behind.

Police recovered almost 200 pounds of marijuana.
