Interim Hidalgo County Judge Named

Hidalgo county commissioners chose Rene Ramirez, chief of staff for state Sen. Juan Chuy Hinojosa, to finish the term of resigning county judge J.D. Salinas. Salinas last week accepted a high-level post with the general services administration. Commissioners appointed Ramirez, 40, to replace him by a 3-2 vote, with Salinas voting in his favor along with commissioners Tito Palacios and Oscar Garza. Commissioners Sylvia handy and Joey Flores voted against him. Ramirez will serve through 2010, when a new county judge will be elected. He said details about his start date were still being worked out.
