During the Texas Pandemic Influenza Regional Conference held Tuesday morning in Harlingen, the Texas Department of State Health services made an important announcement. The Center for Disease Control, and the Hidalgo County Health Department will not test students who show flu-like symptoms for the H1N1 virus unless they are hospitalized.
This announcement came after several valley school districts closed their campuses
in the spring due to the H1N1 virus, which was formerly known as swine flu. Representatives from a federal, state and local level have joined together to elaborate a plan and determine what preventive measures they will follow to deal with H1N1 virus in case of an outbreak this fall. Each day, about 55 million students and 7 million staff members attend the more than 130 thousand public and private school in the entire U.S. by implementing certain 52 recommendations; schools and health officials can help protect them from the H1N1 virus. During today’s conference, state and county authorities announced a protocol to address the school closure situation. This time it will be handled at a local level. This measure will allow for the county judges or school superintendents to close down campuses in case of an outbreak.
But there is some good news. State health officials announced an H1N1 vaccine that should be ready for the general public by this December and will be given four weeks apart. The first doses of the vaccine will be for pregnant women, children younger than five and high-risk patients.
