Immigrant Deaths on the Rise

There has been a considerable increase in the number of illegal immigrants found dead in Deep South Texas compared to last year. According to sources, the number of bodies spiked 72 percent in 2008 over the previous year. The Mexican Consulate in McAllen last year handled 67 bodies found in rugged brush country by Border Patrol Agents or other law enforcement officers, as well as those retrieved from the Rio Grande. Already in 2009 the death toll stands at 14. Immigration officials believe that an intensified border patrol presence, as well the newly built segments of the border wall, has pushed illegal immigrants to riskier routes.
