The swine flu outbreak has a lot of people flooding E.R’s and DR’s offices with the question: do I have the swine flu most people doctors treat just have the flu – nothing more.
So, how do you tell the difference?
“They’re probably difficult to distinguish just based on symptoms.” Said Tim Watt, M.D. Emergency Physician.
Let’s break it down. Doctor Watts says symptoms for the common influenza include fever cough, congestion, and possible nausea and vomiting, and when it comes to swine:
“You’ll see fever cough, congestion… There are reports we’re seeing more nausea and vomiting with the swine flu as opposed to influenza,” said Watt.
So why be alarmed when doctors say swine flu is just like the common virus?
Dr. Tim Watt says the swine flu is actually a variant of the influenza virus that we haven’t built up immunity to.”
Doctor Watt says that’s because the current influenza vaccine does not provide immunity or protection to swine flu. But when it comes to treating the virus:
“Unless your symptoms are severe… You should probably stay at home and focus on not causing that infection in other people.” Concluded the doctor
A couple of more points this doctor wants to make clear. First, you can’t get swine flu from eating pork. Second, like any cold or flu — let common sense guide you. That means washing your hands and simply staying away from people that are sick.
