A state representative wants a new law that will ban adult day care centers from transporting their elderly residents in 15 passenger vans.
This is causing an outrage from several groups that belong to adult day care centers. They left to Austin this morning for a public hearing on the bill, which stems from an accident that occurred in alto bonito in October of 2007 where a van was hit by an oncoming car. Even though the driver of the daycare van was not at fault, several passengers were thrown from the vehicle. Critics of the bill say it has to be further reviewed.
Blanca Gonzalez, Home health owner.- “It needs assessment and a 3rd evaluation what’s not done prior the initiation of this bill, to look at the impact, the devastating impact that this bill will have on the lives of the elderly and the disable citizens of Texas.”
State representative Rene Oliveira says that federal law already bars childcare centers and school districts from using such vans to transport students.
His bill would bar senior-care facilities from purchasing the vehicles starting in September. All currently owned 15-passenger vans would be grand fathered under the law.
