Officials in Hidalgo County received two important awards today from the Texas association of counties leadership foundation. The Texas association of counties presented hidalgo county judge J.D. Salinas with two “best practices awards. According to the association’s president, Hidalgo County is the only one of 16 Texas counties being honored this year for innovative programs. Hidalgo county commissioner Tito Palacios received the first award granted to the county for its efforts to build the levee-barrier as opposed to a border wall in this region. The second award recognized the county’s efforts to reach out to the deaf and hard-of hearing community. A project, the hidalgo county public information officer considered extremely necessary during times of emergency. According to county officials, these projects were the result of innovation, diligence and out-of the box thinking on the part of departments such as the drainage district, commissioners and precincts, health department and the emergency services division. This is the first time the hidalgo county is recognized by the Texas association of counties. It competed among 83 other counties statewide.
