The Texas Department of Public Safety arrested a Hidalgo County Constable Candidate in Victoria, Texas. 46-year-old Robert “Bobby” Maldonado, a candidate for Hidalgo County Precinct 1 Constable, was intercepted by DPS Officials around 3:30pm in Victoria County. Sources close to the investigation tell FOX 2 NEWS Maldonado was under surveillance for a period of at least 18 months. A tip led officials to follow the Mercedes Candidate to North Carolina, where he allegedly was to pick up approximately one million dollars in US Currency. Investigators were on to Maldonado and followed him from North Carolina across Georgia until losing track of his vehicle close to Houston, Texas. A bolo alert was transmitted across the Lone Star State and DPS Officers located his vehicle in Victoria County. DPS requested Maldonado’s consent to inspect his vehicle, but he refused. After a k-9 Unit was called out to the traffic stop to conduct the search, Maldonado allegedly began to argue with officials, who then detained him and upon searching his vehicle located approximately one million dollars in cash. Officials tell FOX 2 NEWS the money was supposed to be picked up and delivered by Maldonado to members of the Gulf Cartel in Mexico. A chunk of the money was to be used to fund Maldonado and other candidate’s political campaign. Maldonado was charged with one count for money laundering and issued a $250,000 cash surety bond. Tonight he remains at the Victoria County Detention Center.
