High salt intake is the primary cause of high blood pressure, which is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease and stroke.
The world health organization recommends only one teaspoon of salt a day.
But most western countries take in closer to two teaspoons a day.
Researchers at the university of Naples in Italy and the university of Warwick in the u-k studied data from more than one-hundred-seventy-thousand people.
They concluded that a reduction in salt intake could prevent one and quarter million deaths from stroke and almost three million deaths from cardiovascular disease each year. The study appears in the British medical journal.
