Harlingen police chief, Daniel Castillo, says his officers are trained to defend themselves if they are attacked. The law, however, does not draw a fine line as to when a police officer can shoot a suspect. It simply states that officers can use their duty weapon.
According to the report, E.M.S. responded immediately after the incident and the suspect was transported to Valley Baptist medical center where he later died.
Daniel Castillo- Harlingen chief of police.- “The identity of the subject is unknown. That is part of our investigation. The Harlingen police department has requested the assistance of the Texas rangers office as well as the Cameron County district attorney’s office in our investigation”
Fox 2 news has learned that the suspect is a Hispanic man in his late 40s, has dark colored hair, and has a slim build. The name of the officer who shot him has not been released, but he is no longer in uniform.
Daniel Castillo- Harlingen chief of police.- “Right now he is on leave not under any disciplinary review at this point. It is proper protocol to give the officer a chance to collect himself”
This all stems from a 911 call regarding a man who was seen igniting a fire underneath an expressway 83 overpass that intersects Harrison Avenue. It is unknown if the man was homeless and was trying to stay warm from last night’s cold temperatures. If you have any information that can help authorities identify the body you are encouraged to contact the Harlingen police department at (956) 216-5400.
