Hidalgo county commissioner Sylvia handy returns to a court of law to face additional charges linked to an investigation of tax fraud and illegal hiring.

An indictment against her, which was handed down last week, claims that handy paid a third female undocumented immigrant with taxpayer money to perform babysitting and housekeeping duties.

These new charges come nearly seven months after federal prosecutors accused the elected official of doing the same thing but with two other women.

The new allegations increase the amount allegedly stolen to 220 thousand dollars.

Handy has maintained that she is innocent of these charges and is expected to enter a “not guilty plea”
