Since the electric service was cut off in many areas of the valley, many people have had to deal with refrigerators filled with spoiled food, but the government is ready to help those food stamp recipients.
The federal government has now granted the state of Texas permission to replace food stamp benefits for those victims most affected by Hurricane Dolly.
Recipients in Brooks, Cameron, Jim Hogg, Willacy County and the following zip codes in Weslaco: 78579, 78592, 78596 or 78599, will automatically replace a portion of a family’s July benefits for food stamp recipients.
“Only those people that are new to the program, they need to go to an office. People that had food stamps in those affected areas will have their benefits replaced automatically. They do not need to go to a local office.”
The monies will be automatically replaced on their lone star cards by Friday. Meanwhile, food stamp recipients in other areas will have 20 days to report their food losses to their local health and human services office.
