It’s a job that requires a good physique and mental training. Not to many people are willing to expose themselves to danger on a daily basis, but officers do it because they want to protect the ordinary citizen. When a police officer wakes up in the morning they have one goal in mind- protect the innocent and capture criminals lurking around our neighborhoods.
“When you leave home you don’t know if you are going to come back that day because there is a 50/50 percent chance that you may not make it home.”
Today, sergeant Barrios and his colleagues commemorated an outstanding officer who worked with the Brownsville police department for almost 18 years.
“What he left here is that you can achieve what you want to achieve, but you have to put your mind into it. He also believes that serving the community is a big part of it. You have to give back to where you came from.”
That is what colonel Eduardo Gutierrez learned from his brother. He and his family are thankful that the city chose to name the police department’s shooting range after officer Ruben Gutierrez. For other officers, it was a day to remember why they joined bpd in the first place.
“I continue doing this job even after all the risks because that’s what I intend to do when I came in, especially for the young people anything that I can do for them.”
Officer Trujillo had a near death experience last year when he responded to a hostage situation and the criminals opened fire at his crew. In his efforts to save a little girl he was shot in the face and lost a finger.
“The reason I kept inside even after the gunfire is because there was a little girl that I promised I would help her out no matter what. At the end the girl came out okay.”
Sergeant Joe barrios says the toughest part about being a police officer is that criminals are always trying to find ways to improve their tactics
