FDA to Approve Stevia

June 8, 2009 Health   Print Print   Email this Article Email this Article   No Comments

There is a natural sugar substitute that may help you manage your sweet tooth.
You may have heard about the South American herb Stevia, which has been used in other countries for decades to sweeten everything from gum to soft drinks.
Stevia hasn’t been as widely used here because it wasn’t recognized as a food ingredient by the F.D.A. until now. The agency has granted approval for two big food companies to use Stevia in food and beverage manufacturing, so that means it’ll start popping up in lots more products.
That’s good news because Stevia is natural, non-toxic and safe for people with diabetes.
Recent research also found it lowers blood pressure in people with mild to moderate hypertension. If you’d like to try Stevia, look for it in packet or liquid form in natural food markets. You can read more about the study in “taste for life” magazine.
