A family in Raymondville will have a warmer Christmas this year and truly be prepared for winter. Their home was severely damaged during hurricane dolly, and it wasn’t until today that they received assistance. Still in shock, Elsa Maria Aucez, is grateful for what catholic charities and other organizations did to lighten up her Christmas. They gave her a better place to raise her two children after hurricane Dolly almost stripped away everything she owns.
Elsa Maria Aucez, was given a new home “It comes with the stove, fridge, three sofas, and that’s what it comes with right now”
Elsa’s roof was nearly blown away, but it was water damage that ruined most of the walls inside.
Elsa Maria Aucez .- “Looking inside you can see the vents were damaged just all the water coming in. My son’s bedroom looked like a water hose had been placed inside. Water just coming through it”
As her last resort to get aid she went to our lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Raymondville. After several months of waiting she was informed a few weeks ago that she had qualified for a mobile home free of charge. Today, the ‘faith community disaster response’ team installed her home, and even though it is not new, it is well kept and is the perfect gift to start the New Year.
Charlie Smith, Faith Community Disaster Response.- “they are ones that could not get help through FEMA and they didn’t have any insurance of any kind”
Otto Lawson, Pharr Community outreach project.- “they apply to catholic charities and the social worker goes out to visit people and makes recommendations on who should be helped”
Catholic charities took into consideration that she is a single mom and the damages posed a health concern for her kids. Elsa’s son drew a Christmas tree on the bathroom wall of his former home as an effort to keep the Christmas spirit alive.
Elsa Maria Aucez “it’s a better Christmas now. I get to see my children smile, because it wasn’t going to be the same as last year”
This is another example that the gift of giving can make a significant impact in someone’s life.
