A new report from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health shows pregnant women who regularly exercise have babies around eight pounds.
They looked at data from nearly forty-four-thousand women and their babies.
Researchers say this shows exercise during pregnancy isn’t a way to “normalize” baby’s weight if it’s at risk of being too small or too big.
But the study also showed a strong link between mom’s weight and having a heavier baby.
For every increased unit of a woman’s body mass index, the baby weighs on average, about point-seven extra ounces.
For example, a woman with a BMI of twenty-nine would be more likely to have a baby that weighs about three-point-six ounces more than the baby of a woman whose b-m-I is twenty-four.
A BMI over twenty-five is considered overweight.
Researchers say this shows doctors should focus on preventing and treating obesity in women of child bearing age.
That, they say, will decrease the risk of giving birth to a baby who weighs too much.
The study appears in the journal “Obstetrics and Gynecology.”
