The sheriff department feels that the most important thing they can do is to instill the trust in the public. Trevino says there was much to do in order to fix the department when he got into office in 2005, and hopes that this four-step program, honor the star, will do great things for the departments employees.
There are four steps that include drug testing, a polygraph test, and a four-hour ethics course among other things. The course is four hours long, which started today and will continue through Thursday. Every person within the sheriffs department is to take the course, which has been a work in progress.
Trevino wants Hidalgo County to know they have the most ethical employees as possible. Within the past few years they have only had to release 5 people that tested positive for drugs, and department is currently 100 percent drug free.
Trevino says this four-hour course will eventually evolve into an 8-hour course over a longer period of time, with more interaction and it will be more hands on. In the last four years the department has released 70 workers who were did not follow the mission statement or the core values.
Trevino has reduced the mission statement and core values of the Hidalgo county sheriffs department to this little card that all employees are required to carry at all times.
